Movie review # 2: Greenland

Well, the main characters survived; obiously! Everyone else who tried to help them, died. There is no scientific explanation to what happened or why. Except that the comet/asteroid is from another solar system.

So, thats that!

Movie review # 1 : Wonder Woman 1984

Saw the second installment of Wonder-woman yesterday. I was looking forward to the relief of watching a major block buster after having being disappointed by Tenet a couple of months ago. But I met my old friend - disappointment - yet again.

What is with DCU? Ruining perfectly good franchises by lousy plots and lack-luster presentation.

WW1984 is a movie with loads of social messages and moral grand-standings. Lets break it down.

The movie starts with an absolutely ridiculous and circus like competitive sport which 9 year old Diana wants to participate and win. What is the significance of this even and why is Baby Diana so motivated to participate in, we are never told. The competition ends with a social message that Truth is everything, bigger than everyone and blah-blah-blah. Baby Diana is chastised for using an "shortcut" after she fell from her horse during the last leg of the event. I Now, it just blows my mind what is truth have to do this incident. It didnt look like there were clear rules of the game which required her to be on the horse for the entire time. This plot took up excruciating 15 mins to deliver a useless message.

The second 15 mins are used to show the adult Diana performing acrobats similar to spiderman and saving the entire neighborhood from petty thefts, brides falling over from the bridge, joggers being run from speeding cars and the usual cliches.

It tends to get better with a real plot being introduced in the form of a magical stone that is capable of granting one wish. But then I meet my old friend again. They decided to bring back Diana's love interest (because apparently thats what she wished) only to let him die again in the climax.

I will not talk anything about the villain because he is as mediocre as the rest of the characters except that of Kristen Wiig. Really loved her performance too. Gal Gadot is beautiful, stunning and athletic as wonder-woman but boy she cannot act even if her life depended on it. Chris Pine gets some good lines but the weight of a sluggish plot is just too much for him to deliver anything memorable.

Speaking of characters, there is stereo-typing all around. The homeless guy is black, the eve-teaser is a white drunk, the villain's son is asian, the villain's secretary is a eastern europian blonde...

The action sequences are generally decent but also forgettable. Oh, and Diana can finally fly. Go-figure.
